Twenty-Four

Monsieur Oliver himself showed up at the arena during practise on Wednesday to congratulate the team on their success. Their record for the season, including the games that had been played before Lou arrived, was five wins, four losses, and two ties, which put them in second place, behind the Vics but ahead of the Alerts. The fourth-place team was the Montreal Westerns, the other Montreal team. The Bakers had played them twice before Lou arrived and had lost both times. But they were struggling now and had slipped to fourth. The Trois-Rivières Flyers, maybe because of the quietness of their arena, were dead last.

“You are moving up, girls, I have no doubt, and you have made the entire bakery very proud. You are becoming the pride of Montreal, in fact,” he said. “And I wish to reward you for it.” He pulled an envelope out of his jacket pocket and waved it in the air. “In here, my dears, are tickets for the game tomorrow night at the Montreal Arena. You will see the Montreal Canadiens take on their archrivals, the Toronto Blueshirts.”

All around Lou, the girls jumped up and down. He bounced a little so he’d blend in, but what he really wanted to do was pump his fist in the air and shout, “Hooray!” at the top of his lungs. Coach had said they needed three wins before going to see the Canadiens, but two wins and two ties had done it. Maybe Monsieur Oliver counted the tie against the formidable Vics as a win, since it was the closest any other team had come.

“Of course, my sister and I, and Coach Robichaud, will be there too. Now, practice hard, girls. I want more victories. My sales skyrocket with every one of your wins, you know.”

As Lou skated, he composed a letter home in his head. He wouldn’t make it too braggy, especially since Francine would be the one reading it to Maman and Papa. The most incredible thing in the world is happening to me tomorrow. No. Tomorrow I am doing something really exciting. No. Tomorrow the whole team is going to watch the Canadiens play.

Never mind! He’d just tell them about it in a few days when he was back home. And he’d write it in the letter Maman was going to ask him to write to Georges. Georges was going to be so jealous, but still he’d want to know. Lou decided he would describe the game in detail, to give Georges something to take his mind off the mud and the gas and the enemies.

“Wear your own skirts or dresses, but put the uniform sweater on top and wear the tuque,” said Madame Oliver after dinner the next day. “We want people to know who you are. You heard my brother. People are starting to take notice. You’ll be as famous as the Canadiens soon enough.”

Lou was glad. Dressing was always tough. The only thing he really felt comfortable in was the Bakers’ uniform.
